1964 Land Rover Series IIA 88 - Beautifully Restored

1964 Land Rover Series IIA 88? Station Wagon finished in rare Sand over Black vinyl and equipped with the extremely desirable ?Tropical Roof? option, as well as a rear-mounted spotlight and aggressive off-road tires. The Series IIA is widely regarded as the most enduring Series model constructed, both in terms of its mechanical and physical ruggedness and the perception the public has of the Land Rover marque in general. In the 1960s dozens of films and documentaries showed the western world far away locales for the first time, almost always made accessible by someone driving a Series IIA. In many ways, it was during this period that Land Rover built its continuing legacy in the public?s mind, and this Landy is the perfect representation of that. The IIA retains its original tried, true and battle tested (in some cases literally) 2 ¼ Litre Petrol 4 cylinder engine, which was fully sorted when the car was restored some three years and 2,000 miles ago. The high, neutral and low ranges all work, the 4-speed manual transmission shifts crisply through each of the gears and is assisted by a fully functional overdrive unit, allowing for cruising at highway speeds. The engine starts easily, idles consistently and pulls strongly and smoothly. Compression is excellent and ride quality is everything you?d expect of a fully sorted Series IIA ? rugged, visceral and grin-inducing.Aesthetically the truck is truly outstanding. An extremely high quality paint job in the original Sand color, the finish is deep, lustrous and consistent, marred only by a handful of exceedingly minor rock chips and the like, none of which are significant enough to appear in any of the pictures. The galvanized steel trim beautifully defines the entirely straight and rust-free body, which retains factory correct panel fits and gaps. All of the glass and rubber is in good shape, as is the front bumper and rear tow hook-up platform, and the truck?s undercarriage and frame is extremely original and entirely free of corrosion. The wheels are also in excellent condition, fitted with aggressive steel-belted off road tires with less than 2,000 miles of wear. The interior is impeccable, the dash is clean and straight forward with working gauges and switches, the rubber floor mats new, and the headliner and black vinyl interior panels flawless. The black vinyl seats show virtually no wear, both front and back, and the truck is fitted with an Alpine CD player with auxiliary plug-ins, tucked discreetly out of the way below the front passenger seat. The truck has seat belts for five adults, however seven can comfortably fit with the rear bench seats. The truck is also fitted with the rare and desirable ?Tropical Roof? option. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an iconic, beautiful, rust-free and mechanically sound original LHD Series IIA 88 Station Wagon optioned with the desirable Tropical Roof and finished in an uncommon and wonderfully era-specific livery. The truck?s been looked over by our local vintage Land Rover mechanic (with 40+ years experience) and he?s concurred with our original assessment: this is undoubtedly one of the finest Series IIAs in the world.
